Simply because one must stay indoors and a safe distance apart does not require that one give up the civilizing influence of tea time with one's acquaintances!  Grab a cuppa, don your favorite hat, cap, or bonnet, and log on to Zoom (click here to open a free account) to join friends and members face-to-face via this convenient online platform.  Each gathering will have a different theme or topic and we welcome your company and conversation.  You must register in order to join the meeting but you do not need to be an RSV member in order to participate. Registration closes June 1.

This week's theme: Developing a First Person Impression.  Come ready to share your tips (or learn how!) to be able to be more comfortable interacting with people in the manner of an early 19th century person.

Throughout time small gifts were often exchanged as a token of friendship. One might send a beloved friend an embroidered needle case, or create a pin cushion, replete with pins, for a new mother. It is in the spirit of creation and friendship that the Regency Society of Virginia invites you to our Pincushion Sew Along and Exchange via Zoom on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at 8:00 p.m.

We shall be hand sewing a small cushion that can be easily finished in less than an hour (machine sewing is just fine).  Once the basic front of the cushion is complete you may choose to embroider, spangle, embellish or just leave alone to highlight your fabric selections.

You will need: two 4 x 4 inch fabric scraps, a sheet of felt or a 6 x 6 inch piece of sturdy fabric, paper, pencil, scissors, thread, bees wax (optional), and a small embroidery hoop (optional).

For those whom wish to participate in the secret pin cushion exchange will be sent the address of their special friend. Please remember If you do wish to exchange your cushion you will need to be willing to share your address.

Instructions will be sent out via email prior to the event.

One does not need to be a member to participate, though you will need to register on our web site: varegency.org

If our first event proves a success we shall more sew along in the future: pin cases, housewives, needle cases, reticules, kerchiefs and more. We hope you will join us for our first event.

Enjoy a weekend in the Regency era with other ladies as enthusiastic about the time as you are!  This 4-day/3-night event will be hosted at the beautiful North Point Plantation, an 18th century estate overlooking the Mattaponi River.  Period attire is encouraged (but not required).  Registration includes all lodging (shared beds) and meals for the duration of your stay.  We will indulge in early 19th century amusements and pursuits throughout the long weekend.  Space for this event is extremely limited so early registration is encouraged.  Registration will open for RSV members on March 6, and will open for non-members on March 13.  We are accepting both online and offline payments for this event.  Payments made by check will be granted a $10 discount, however, the check must be received no later than one week after registration in order to hold a spot at the retreat.  If you are unable to secure a space, be sure to add your name to the waitlist as we have often been able to pull from it in the past when a registrant is unable to attend.  Registration will close for this event on September 1.

The RSV is delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the annual Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) Conference being hosted in Hampton, Virginia this year.  As a part of the event, the organizers wish to create a timeline to share the positive contributions African-Americans have had throughout American history.  In keeping with the desires of the AAHGS, we are seeking to represent the Early Republic period with a group that is "diverse, ranging in age from young children whose  parents bring them along to events, to the elderly, and portray events consistent with present day understanding of African American history."  Period attire is required for this event and, in order to offer the most educational experience for conference attendees, must be as accurate as possible.  Please register no later than October 7 so we can gauge participation.
